Solar Tax Credits & Incentives

Commercial Solar Tax Credits in 2026

The solar conversation changed this year, but for commercial, institutional, and public-sector organizations and the financial case is as strong as ever. The federal incentives that make solar work are still in place. What’s changed is the timeline and the documentation behind them, which means the organizations that benefit most in 2026 are the ones that plan early. At Solar Energy Solutions, we engineer projects to capture every available incentive while meeting the new compliance and deadline requirements from day one.

The 30-50% Tax Credit Is Still Here

The federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) under Section 48E remains the foundation of commercial solar economics, returning 30% of your qualifying project cost as a dollar-for-dollar credit against your federal tax liability. Additionally, there is a 10% bonus for meeting domestic content requirements, and another 10% bonus for systems installed in an Energy Community. For-profit businesses claim it as a credit. Tax-exempt organizations, including nonprofits, schools, and government entities, can still receive the same 30-50% as a direct cash payment through the Direct Pay provision, so the incentive works whether or not your organization pays federal tax.

The Deadline That Drives Every Decision Now

The One Big Beautiful Bill Act compressed the timeline for commercial solar. Solar projects now must be completely installed with permission to operate from the utility by December 31, 2027. This can be a tight timeline since commercial installations need to complete a number of hurdles before getting started such as:

  • Engineering and feasibility analysis
  • Interconnection and utility coordination
  • Procurement and compliance alignment
  • Construction scheduling

Starting early is the single most reliable way to protect your eligibility, especially for commercial and institutional systems with longer build periods.

FEOC Compliance Is Now Part of Project Design

The most important new requirement is Foreign Entity of Concern (FEOC) compliance. For projects beginning construction after December 31, 2025, a minimum percentage of your equipment’s value must come from sources not tied to certain foreign nations, and that threshold increases in the years ahead. Fail to meet it, and the credit can be reduced or lost entirely.

100% Bonus Depreciation Is Back

Alongside the ITC, commercial owners can now deduct 100% of their system’s depreciable cost in the first year. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act permanently restored full first-year bonus depreciation for qualifying equipment placed in service after January 19, 2025, replacing the previous schedule that had been phasing down.

When paired with the ITC, this is one of the strongest first-year tax positions that commercial solar has ever offered.

Battery Storage Has a Longer Runway

If solar timing is tight for your facility, energy storage offers more flexibility. Battery and energy storage systems are not subject to the accelerated solar deadlines and remain eligible for the 30% ITC into the early 2030s. Storage also qualifies for 100% bonus depreciation, and for commercial operations it delivers demand-charge management and backup power on top of the tax benefits. That longer runway is reshaping how we structure projects for facilities that want to move deliberately.

Frequently asked questions

What does a commercial solar system cost?
There’s no single price for commercial solar. Your total cost depends on your facility size, energy usage, demand charge reduction goals, available roof or ground space, and the incentives your organization qualifies for. Rather than quote a number that won’t fit your situation, we design every quote from the ground up and provide a transparent, custom estimate with projected savings and ROI. The goal is always the configuration that delivers the strongest financial return, which is not always the largest system.
What’s the payback period and return on investment?
Payback depends on your energy costs, system size, incentives, and financing, so we model it specifically for your facility rather than relying on a generic figure. With immediate energy savings, demand-charge reductions, and local and federal incentives available in 2026, well-structured commercial projects continue to deliver attractive long-term returns. We’ll show you a realistic, incentive-aware financial model before you commit anything.
What incentives can my business claim?
The federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) provides a 30% dollar-for-dollar credit on your qualifying project cost, and projects that meet domestic content thresholds qualify for a 10% bonus, and projects built in an energy community qualify for a 10% bonus. This makes the total possible tax credit 50%. On top of the credit, 100% first-year bonus depreciation lets you deduct your system’s depreciable cost immediately, which, together with the ITC, can recover a substantial share of the project cost in the first year. In some locations, local or utility incentives may also apply. SES identifies every program you qualify for and documents it properly.
Our organization is tax-exempt. Can we still benefit?
Yes. Nonprofits, schools, and government entities can receive the same 30-50% credit as a direct cash payment through the federal Direct Pay provision, so the incentive works whether or not your organization pays federal tax.
